On November 13, we had the honor of co-organizing an engaging career talk session with Saito University College, that offered a unique window into the dynamic world of security. Michael Fong and Munusamy Sundra Rajoo, members of ASIS International Malaysia Chapter were the keynote speakers, drawing from their vast expertise to provide invaluable insights to an audience of 60 undergraduates from diploma and degree programs in security and law enforcement.
The event, aptly titled "Is There a Future in a Career in Security?", aimed to address the evolving landscape of both physical and cybersecurity. With rapid advancements in technology, the question of what a future in security looks like is especially relevant to students at this stage in their education.
Both speakers began by sharing their journey in the security industry, detailing their current role and the steps that led them there. In their sharing, they emphasized the importance of both formal education and practical experience, noting that skills in critical thinking, situational awareness, and adaptability are crucial for anyone aspiring to a career in security. These insights were not only personal but underscored the importance of resilience and commitment in a field that requires constant vigilance.
Further, both Michael and Munusamy spoke candidly about the requirements for advancing in the security sector, explaining that while formal education lays the groundwork, real-world experience—particularly in handling diverse security scenarios—is invaluable. They discussed how the daily roles of security professionals can vary widely, from conducting threat assessments and managing crisis response to investigating breaches and coordinating with law enforcement.
When asked about the future of security in the current global environment, both speakers were optimistic. As technology is rapidly shaping both physical and cyber security, the industry needs qualified professionals to meet the growing demands. According to the speakers, this presents tremendous opportunities for students who are prepared to adapt to evolving threats. As they say, a career in security is more than a job—it’s a calling. Professionals in this field must be ready to respond to threats that are both frequent and increasingly complex.
The session also explored how security professionals work alongside law enforcement. Both speakers highlighted the importance of collaboration with law enforcement agencies, especially in managing crises and investigations. Through this collaboration, security professionals can enhance their response capabilities and contribute more effectively to public safety.
The session closed with advice from Michael and Munusamy for students aspiring to join the security field. They encouraged students to seek hands-on experience through internships and to keep up with the latest developments in both physical and digital security. They emphasized that curiosity and continuous learning are essential, as the security landscape will continue to evolve.
The career talk at Saito University College was a resounding success, leaving students inspired and better informed about the possibilities in the security industry. The ASIS International Malaysia Chapter hopes to host more sessions like this, providing a platform for industry leaders to mentor and inspire the next generation of security professionals.
